Stream newsflashes using formula field values in Hoopla

Trigger a streaming newsflash from a calculated value by having a Salesforce workflow write your formula's result into a standard field.

KB-036918 steps Last verified

Streaming Newsflashes use Salesforce’s “Streaming API” to track changes on individual records based on customized criteria. Unfortunately, Salesforce does not support formula fields in the queries involved with each “Push Topic”.

If you are trying to use a formula field in your Streaming Newsflash criteria, you will get an error because it is not supported. However, you can work around this by creating a new field on your object, which is updated by a Salesforce workflow. Here’s how!

Legacy Workflow Rules: Salesforce ended support and updates for Workflow Rules on December 31, 2025. Existing rules can still be edited and activated; new automations should use Flow Builder. Use these legacy steps where available. If New Rule is unavailable, ask your Salesforce admin to implement the field update in Flow Builder. See Salesforce workflow guidance.

  1. In Salesforce Setup, navigate to App Setup > Customize and select the object upon which your Streaming Newsflash is based.

  2. Click Fields to see a list of fields on your object.

  3. Click New to create a new field.

  4. Specify the field type. For example, select Currency if the number you’re seeking to use in your criteria is a currency.

  5. Give the field a label, and save**.**

  1. Navigate toCreate > Workflow & Approvals > Workflow Rules.

  2. Click New Rule.

  3. Select the object upon which your Streaming Newsflash is based.

  4. Give the rule a name.

  5. Specify the rule criteria. Example: if you want to update a certain value when a deal is won, add “Won equals True”.

  6. Save your new rule.

After creating your workflow rule, you can add your workflow action.

  1. Click Add Workflow Action and New Field Update.

  2. Give it a name, and select the field to update.

  3. For options, select “Use a formula to set the new value”.

  4. Enter the formula that gives you the value you need. Copy it from the original formula field if appropriate.

  5. Save your changes.

  6. Return to the workflow rule detail page and click Activate. Confirm that the rule is active before testing it.

  7. In Hoopla, use the new standard field in your streaming Newsflash criteria and save the configuration.

Confirm the workflow rule is active, then update a test record that meets its criteria. Check that the standard field receives the calculated value and that the Hoopla Newsflash fires when its criteria match.

Check the rule’s active status and evaluation criteria, the field-update formula, and that Hoopla references the standard field rather than the formula field. Ask your Salesforce admin or Hoopla support for help if the field does not update.
