Set up product events for lift-and-learn displays

Trigger product-specific content on your display when a shopper picks up a product from a shelf, using nested playlists and rules.

KB-01848 steps Last verified

Use this guide when you want to trigger specific content on your displays when customers pick up products from retail shelves. Product events let you show targeted information about each product without building custom apps, making it easier to customize content after deployment.

  1. Plan your content strategy Decide what default “attract” content to show on the screen, and what content to display when a customer picks up each product.

  2. Create playlists for each product Navigate to your library, select Create from the top menu, and choose Create a Playlist. Create one playlist for each product on your shelf (for example, three playlists if you have three products).

  3. Name your playlists Right-click on each playlist’s context menu, select Rename, and give each playlist a descriptive name that matches the product it represents (for example, “Dove Hair Mask”, “Dove Shampoo”, “Dove Conditioner”).

  4. Add content to each playlist Add the appropriate product-specific content into each playlist.

  5. Create a parent playlist Create a new parent playlist that contains all three product playlists nested inside it, plus your default attract screen content.

  6. Set up triggers for each nested playlist For each nested product playlist:

    • Open the context menu and click Rules
    • From the Source 1 dropdown, select Product Events → Product Picked up
    • From the Compare dropdown, select Equals
    • From the Source 2 dropdown, select Custom Value and type the exact product name that matches your region configuration
    • Click Done to save the rule
    • Repeat for all nested playlists
  7. Set schedule type to Override For each nested playlist:

    • Select Schedule from the playlist’s context menu
    • Change the Schedule Type from “Join” to “Override” so content switches immediately when a product is picked up
    • Click Done → Save
  8. Save your main playlist Click Save in the Playlist Builder to save all changes.

Pick up each product from your configured shelf. The display should immediately switch to show the content for that specific product. If triggers behave correctly, the content will change in real-time as products are picked up.

  • Content doesn’t trigger: Verify that the product name in your rule builder exactly matches the product name in your region configuration. Product names are case-sensitive and must match precisely.
  • Content delays or doesn’t switch immediately: Check that all nested playlists are set to “Override” schedule type, not “Join”. The Join type waits for previous content to complete, while Override switches immediately.
  • Need to change region configuration or product mappings: Contact Displai support. Region configuration is currently managed by the support team using an internal tool.
