Use nested playlists to organize and schedule content
Nest playlists inside a parent playlist to reuse content blocks and schedule them to join or override the parent's content.
When to use this
Section titled “When to use this”Nested playlists let you combine multiple playlists inside a parent playlist. Use this feature when you want to reuse content blocks across different playlists, centrally manage content that appears in multiple places, or schedule content to join or override your default playlist at specific times. This simplifies your workflow by letting you update one nested playlist and automatically update every parent playlist that contains it.
- Open the parent playlist where you want to add a nested playlist.
- Click the ’+’ icon to add content to the playlist.
- Select an existing playlist from the list to nest it inside the parent.
- Click the ellipses button (three dots) on the right side of the nested playlist item to open the Action Strip.
- To schedule the nested playlist, select Schedule from the Action Strip.
- In the Schedule modal, enable scheduling and choose how the nested playlist should behave:
- Join: The nested playlist content plays alongside the parent playlist content
- Override: The nested playlist replaces all parent playlist content for the scheduled duration
- Set your start time, end time, and any recurrence rules.
- Save the schedule.
Verify
Section titled “Verify”The nested playlist appears inside your parent playlist with a nested indicator icon. If you enabled scheduling, you will see the schedule details displayed next to the nested playlist. Preview the parent playlist to confirm the nested content plays at the correct times and in the correct mode (join or override).
If it doesn’t work
Section titled “If it doesn’t work”If the nested playlist does not play when expected, check these common issues:
- Parent playlist schedule blocks child content: If the parent playlist has a schedule and is not active, the nested playlist will not play regardless of its own schedule. Parent playlist schedules always take precedence.
- Scheduling conflict between multiple nested playlists: Review each nested playlist schedule in the Action Strip to identify overlaps. The most recently added schedule may take priority in join mode; in override mode, the active override blocks all other content.
- Insufficient permissions: Confirm you have editor or admin access to both the parent and nested playlists. If you cannot edit a nested playlist, the ellipses button will not display full options.
